This Korean martial art has been independently developed for over 20 centuries, and is a free-fighting combat sport using bare hands and feet to repel an opponent. It features intense kicking combined with rapid hand motions and fluid body movements. It is primarily a kicking art, famous for its powerful kicks, with a fairly linear style and an emphasis on keeping the opponent well away from the body instead of closing in for the decisive blow.
While most traditional aspects have been maintained, after Taekwondo's acceptance as an official Olympic sport, the main focus of modern Taekwondo is athleticism.
Its philosophy is based on the following tenets: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit. The mental, physical, and spiritual effort that the student contributes during training helps develop these positive attributes, enabling him or her to become a more well-rounded and responsible person.
